Improved CO₂ model helps organizations measure their waste impact
Tauw partners

Amsterdam, March 18, 2025 How circular is a waste stream? What does circularity mean in practice? What is its real CO₂ impact? More and more businesses and governments seek insight into their environmental impact but struggle with fragmented data and incomplete reporting. That is why TAUW and Seenons have expanded and improved their CO₂ model. This enhanced model provides accurate data and practical insights, enabling organizations to optimize their waste management and comply with increasingly strict sustainability regulations.

Regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) play an increasing role in CO₂ reporting. While these policies continue to evolve, transparency in waste management is becoming ever more important. By investing in insight and circularity now, organizations can not only prepare for future reporting requirements but also actively contribute to sustainability. Since its inception, Seenons has been committed to a transparent and circular waste sector, where waste is no longer seen as residual material but as a valuable resource.

To accelerate this vision, Seenons and environmental consultancy and engineering firm TAUW have joined forces to enhance and expand an independent CO₂ model that provides improved insights into waste streams and climate impact. Fully CSRD-compliant and aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), this model helps businesses meet ESRS E1 and E5 reporting standards while supporting them in making strategic, data-driven sustainability decisions.

Collaboration is key to making a real impact. With TAUW as a partner, we are taking another step toward achieving our mission of creating a world without waste. Their expertise in CO₂ data provides us with the tools to better support companies in reaching their sustainability goals.

Five years of data, now more Advanced than ever

For five years, Seenons has been collecting, analyzing, and making CO₂ data in the waste sector accessible—and now, this is being taken to the next level. Since launching their collaboration in the summer of 2024, TAUW has significantly refined and expanded the CO₂ model. Previously covering 53 waste streams, the updated model now includes CO₂ data for over 150 waste streams, incorporating both common and less conventional waste flows such as hazardous waste, mattresses, and blue wraps.

Beyond expanding the model’s scope, its depth and accuracy have also been improved. The R-ladder score, which was already in use, is now available for a much broader range of waste streams. Additionally, TAUW has introduced avoided emissions into the model, a game-changer that quantifies how much CO₂ is prevented through reuse and recycling. This enables businesses and governments to actively steer CO₂ reduction and circularity, using data as a foundation for their sustainability strategies.

What does this mean for businesses & governments?

With these enhancements, Seenons now offers organizations even greater insight into waste management and environmental impact. Through Seenons’ dashboard, businesses can track:

  • Which waste streams are hazardous and how they are classified under ESRS E5
  • CO₂ emissions per waste stream, including processing and logistics impact
  • Circularity score and material ranking on the R-ladder
  • Which waste streams are source-separated and what percentage is sorted at the source
  • How much material is retained after processing

With this data-driven approach, organizations can optimize waste strategies, comply with regulatory requirements, and accelerate their transition to circular waste management.

Long-term collaboration for maximum impact

Seenons and TAUW are committed to a long-term partnership to continuously improve and expand the CO₂ model. New waste streams will be analyzed and added, ensuring that the model remains accurate, adaptable, and relevant across Europe. In the future, both organizations aim to expand beyond CO₂ emissions tracking by integrating broader environmental impact factors, such as the effects of waste on ecosystems.
