Amsterdam, November 14, 20244The Dutch Government has entered into an innovative waste logistics contract with impact-driven company Seenons, which has been in effect since January 1, 2023. This collaboration restructures waste transport at locations of various government organizations, such as the Municipality of Amsterdam and the Social Insurance Bank, with the aim of creating a more transparent chain, more sustainable transport, and maximizing reuse of resources.

The Dutch Government aims for sustainable and transparent resource management, focusing on avoiding waste streams and recycling and reusing materials. Together with Seenons, a six-year initiative, with the option to extend for two more years, has been launched to make waste collection and transport more sustainable, enhance the transparency of the waste chain, and provide insight into environmental impact.

As an innovative platform for waste management, Seenons is dedicated to circular waste management by serving as a connecting link in waste logistics. Their platform connects organizations such as offices, healthcare facilities, and manufacturing companies looking to dispose of their waste streams with both traditional waste service providers and innovative players in the waste market. In this way, Seenons enables these organizations to process their waste streams efficiently, sustainably, and transparently through software and data insights.

In the past, waste from government locations was managed by two logistics partners, resulting in limited transparency and a high volume of residual waste. The new contracts have enabled the Dutch Government to separate logistics from processing wherever possible, introducing significant changes to the market.

Expansion to 22 logistics partners

A major transformation is the expansion of logistics partners serving the Dutch Government, growing from 2 to 22. This collaboration with Seenons empowers local players to take on a pivotal role in waste management. The result is a more open waste market, fostering innovation and allowing for customized waste collection and weighing solutions, from small wheelie bins to large container skips.

Smart weighing systems for accurate waste management

Seenons leverages advanced data analytics to detect irregularities in waste measurements. Pattern recognition and anomaly detection enable rapid issue resolution, ensuring consistently high levels of weighing accuracy.

Environmental impact

The Dutch Government monitors this contract, in collaboration with Seenons, based on the following KPIs:

• CO₂-emissions

• NOx-emissions

• Particulate matter

• Energy consumption (fuel/load of transport)

• Road usage

These KPIs are aligned with the Green Deal Zero Emission Urban Logistics (GD173). Since the contract’s inception, it has been determined that waste logistics account for 7–12% of the Dutch Government’s total environmental impact related to waste management.

Social impact

Beyond sustainability and transparency, the Dutch Government prioritizes Social Return. Seenons partners with social development organizations Pantar, offering jobs to people facing employment barriers. This collaboration supports both environmentally responsible waste management and social inclusion, creating meaningful employment opportunities.

Innovative mini compactors

Last month, the first Impress mini compactor was installed at the Municipality of Amsterdam. These compactors compress waste from 11 660-liter wheelie bins into just 1.5 cubic meters, significantly reducing the number of transport trips and cutting logistics emissions by up to 83%.

Progress towards Zero Emission

The cooperation between the Dutch Government and Seenons has already achieved a Zero Emission collection rate exceeding the original target of 29.5%. This means that over one-third of waste streams are now collected without fossil fuel emissions, making a significant contribution to the government’s sustainability goals and further reducing environmental impact.

This collaboration demonstrates that circular waste management not only delivers environmental benefits but also creates transparent supply chains and social advantages. By combining innovation and inclusion, both parties are building a future where waste remains a valuable resource.
